I’ve just always struggled with the suspension of disbelief required of me. Of all the genres of books I have read or would like to read, urban fantasy and paranormal ones have never been my favorites. (Me anytime I need to explain something at any time: This is a complex issue that could span pages and pages, but that I’ll try and keep succinct. So why deduct a star if you loved it so much? This story had such a unique flavor to it and I think it should be required reading for any budding novelist or filmmaker interested in telling urban fantasy or paranormal stories. The plot focuses on the sisters, particularly the older one’s struggles to have something that’s “just hers” and her fear of ghosts. This wasn’t just your average Twilight ripoff. The plot took me in so many unexpected turns and twists. I loved how the big sister wants to look out for the little sister and loves her unbridled energy despite her terminal illness. The sister relationship in this book is AMAZING. This could have been just any other paranormal novel (Twilight, anyone?) but it’s a unique take on a familiar trope. Ghosts is about a pair of sisters who move (with their parents) to a new town because the younger one has cystic fibrosis, and they discover their new town is haunted. Rarely will I buy books at full price (my three main sources for books are free ARCs sent to me by publishers/indie authors, library books, and used/discounted books from the half price bookstore) but I saw this one while at the (regular, not half-price) bookstore and was just like “Why did I not know about the existence of this book before now?” and immediately headed for the cash register. Raina Telgemeier is an auto-buy author for me. I think I missed the publication of this one because I was out of the country that year and not really keeping up with Telgemeier’s work.
